Is There a Cost?

Most families receive CHIP coverage absolutely free. Others can get the same benefits at a low cost. If your income is below the lowest amount listed, your child or teen may be enrolled in Medical Assistance.

Whether CHIP is free or low-cost depends on the number of members in the household as well as total household income. For free CHIP, there are no premiums or copays.  Premiums and copays apply for low-cost and full-cost CHIP.

For most families, CHIP is free. Households whose income is above a certain level (see the chart below) can receive CHIP at low or full cost, which is very reasonable for comprehensive, quality coverage.

*If your income is below any amount listed, your family could be eligible for Medical Assistance.

You can review comprehensive income information in a chart that outlines the specific income levels in which families are eligible for free CHIP service. The income chart helps families determine which category they may qualify for – FREE, low-cost or full-cost CHIP. CHIP has also created a chart displaying the rates by insurance company.
